That would only be true if he paid the full amount he bid direct to 
Mitsubi****, if the transaction was set up so he only paid Mitsubi**** the 
cars normal price then he paid the balance direct to the charity then 
the way the transaction was arranged is very relevant.
I'd be amazed that the transaction wasn't setup so he could get a 
deduction, if that isn't the case then I agree he's a dumb bastard but 
thats rarely the case with someone who has that sort of money to donate 
to charity.
