Believe it or not - corruption...sort of..
If you KNOW you're going to be a long-term supplier, you can build in 
quality that you just wouldn't bother with if your contract position was 
chancey and was only as good as your price for the next round bids.
Which in turn means your stuff IS the best, which re-enforces your 
position, and so on.

Think Nippondenso-Toyota, and Calsonic-Nissan.
These are extremely long-lived 'associations' in the scheme of things.
But Who knows - T and N might even be major shareholders of those 
companies:-)
