If the clutch is depressed, maybe the driver shouldn't kick it so
often.

The clutch in my TDI is happy now. The one it came with from the
factory wasn't.

There's a clutch ppedal position switch, used mainly by cruise
control. I can crank in-gear with the clutch engaged; a big safety
feature to quickly move the car should the engine stall in a nasty
place.

The Audi A3 S****tback (actually the wagon version) that I drove in
Europe last year also used the clutch switch for controlling the
engine's output. It wouldn't rev with the clutch pedal down. Gently
applying the throttle and expecting the revs to rise didn't happen;
until the clutch was let out. (Fortunately, the clutch was on a
short leash. :-) ) That takes some getting used to.

I have no idea how the hell you're supposed to smoke the front if
you can't rev the engine before dumping the clutch. What were they
thinking!
