If the gear****ft is in neutral, the clutch doesn't have to be depressed.
Hence, if he always starts in neutral, he wouldn't know that the clutch
has to be depressed when starting in gear...
Of course, it's also possible to use the neutral sensor to do other
stupid emission related things, plus Bernd's observation about not being
able to rev the engine up when in neutral. IIRC, the Toyota 1UZ usually
has that feature too, which makes doing a stationary noise test somewhat
difficult...
For warranty reasons, I'd be surprised if a car that has a neutral switch
feeding to the computer is able to be cranked in gear with the clutch
released. After all, that all comes down to software.
