Many options at that price.
If you want something really robust and don't mind 2nd hand, you can get
a Motorola Syntrx programmed for UHF CB. All the controls are located on
the mic and the unit is tough as nails. The speaker is also external to
the main body. You could probably drive over the radio and odds are
it'll still work.
These are commercial quality and the specifications are much higher than
any GME or Uniden... also designed to put out 5 times the power, which
means at 5 watts (max. legal UHF CB power) they'll hardly break a sweat.
Or - you could wind up the power of course...
On the negative side, they're getting on in years and cannot be bought
new. For some people this is a problem, for others not so.
I've owned a few (and still own one) over the past 18 years and they're
very reliable.
They're also idiot-proof in terms of use and can be found on eBay for
$80-$150. There are a few good regular sellers on there who specialise
in these units.
Anyway, that is just one option.
Up to the $500 price range, you also have choices from Icom, Kenwood,
Philips/Simoco etc etc.
