The theory was to build up the HT, then it would jump at a higher
voltage. This is apparent on a scope when you pull a plug lead*.
Replacing the coil with a s****ts coil would be much better and change the
leads to good quality types. Those old carbon leads were f*n terrible.
Also a dwell extended points triggered ignition helps the coil saturate
(more time). I built quite a few of those over the years.
*Don't pull a plug lead on a running modern vehicle.
