What in the name of glub does "democracy" have to do with stupid
arbitrary speed limits? They get imposed on you. You don't get to vote
on them, you don't get a say in them. And with both sides of politics
in the thrall of the "speed kills" soundbite brigade, you don't get to
throw their ***** out of office and get them replaced by someone who
might, just possibly, have two functioning synapses relating to the
issue.
A heavily trafficked road near here - a major thoroughfare - had had a
limit of 60 for years. All of a sudden, and without any known motoring
carnage having occurred in the area, the 60 signs disappeared to be
replaced by 50 signs.
I must have missed the plebiscite on that one.
That's ALSO how we get idiocy like the "120 hours" rule for learner
drivers, rather brilliantly derided here:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/opinion/readers-driven-to-distraction-as-minister-looks-the-other-way/2008/05/09/1210131257971.html
"I have no doubt that Roozendaal and his road safety grand vizier at
the RTA, a certain Dr Soames Job, can blather away po-faced from now
until Christmas with banalities about "keeping young people safe on
our roads" etc, but let them show us the proof that they are doing
that.
This oppression has nothing to do with road safety and everything to
do with the quick fix. As so often happens with this government, it is
mere gesture politics. Its magic solution for every little local
difficulty is to bring in tougher rules, stricter laws, heavier
penalties, so it can be seen to be doing something. Anything. Whether
it works or not is beside the point.
So I state the case again. This monstering of learner drivers is
capricious, offensive, stupid, and counterproductive. But the
Government is so steeped in arrogance and so remote from the people
that it no longer cares. Anything about that you don't understand,
Eric, do let me know."
And the other side would never dare speak out against such a policy,
because the usual shrieking harridans would be on Today Tonight that
very evening labelling them "Childrun killers!!!". As indeed they
would do with any politician who might dare point out that short of
reverting to a speed limit of 1km/h, requiring all cars to have 2
metres of cotton wool surrounding all surfaces, and having a guy
walking in front waving red flags, fla****ng lights and sounding an air
horn, you can NEVER eliminate ALL risks on the road.
But it has not a blind thing to do with so-called "democracy".
