Some interesting things to consider in the whole speed camera (or, as the 
more friendly name the government likes to call them "road safety camera) 
debate is that Victoria is the only state in the country that *doesn't*
have 
warning signs indicating that cameras are in use in the areas where they
are 
being used, uses private companies with unmarked cars for mobile cameras 
(who have exemptions to park illegally while carrying out their
"business") 
and has camera tolerances set to trigger within the +/-10% error margin of

ADR compliant speedometers of every car sold in Australia up until a
couple 
of years ago.

As a direct result, Victoria's speed camera revenue is greater than that
of 
the rest of the country's combined.

Numerous studies have been carried out by motoring bodies and traffic 
management experts over the years suggesting that the *best* way of making

people comply to speed limits is to have a visible police presence on the 
roads rather than using a hidden camera to send people an infringement 
notice a few days after the event when the have no recollection of what
they 
were doing at the time.

Of course, the government is well aware of this, and also understands that

while more police on the roads would definitely see a reduction in traffic

offences (as well as the side effect of reduced "target of op****tunity" 
crime simply due to the increased police presence)  it would *cost* money 
while leading to a reduction in speed related revenue at the same time.
Thus 
the concern for safety and ensuring that road rules are adhered to is of 
secondary im****tance to that of prosecuting offenders and generating cash.

You want to believe that it's not anything other than a cash cow then good

for you, but you're in a very select minority.
