I saw the story, some "expert" from Wheels claimed that tyres more than 
6 yrs old "dry out" and become dangerous.
The only evidence they showed to sup****t this was some testing in the US 
where a tyre blew causing a 4WD to roll, they didn't present any 
evidence that these so called dangerous tyres are responsible for any 
serious crashes here.
IMO its possible that an older tyre will be harder and won't have as 
much traction as a new tyre but I don't know of any tyre failures caused 
just by a tyres age.
