Must be different in your part of the world. In Melbourne we have lots of 
bike lanes, and they're sections of the road dedicated to the exclusive
use 
of cyclists. Ie: In between the kerbside car parking places and the
nearest 
car lane. You can't park or drive in them.

Not all of them are as nicely laid out as that one though. Most of them 
usually come about at the expense of vehicle lane space, and, as usual, 
cyclists don't have to pay a cracker to have them.
