Crank angle sensors were an extremely common fault on VL's, but it
generally 
affected the ignition side.

The fact that you can get it to run on aerostart suggests that it's 
fuel/injector related, and that's the area I'd be looking in. You could 
perhaps try swapping the injector relay for a known good one to see if
that 
makes a difference, and test the voltage going to the relay to see if you 
have an issue in that department as it sounds like the injectors aren't 
getting any/enough power.
