How would I know they were as good as new? Hmm... Let me see.....I drove

Seriously, they were still soft and pliable and had no blemishes, but then

they were wrapped in grease paper from new in 1944 and had been in dry 
storage since. I was only able to get four of them which went onto the 
vehicle, and the spare was a modern equivalent. Compared to the 1944 
originals you couldn't tell them apart.

New old stock tyres from the 1920's exist and people still fit and use
them 
on restored vehicles.
