I don't remember them having a separate injector control unit but then
again 
it's been a *long* time since I was anywhere near one.

One other tip that just came to mind.

You mentioned that it had a fire and you put it out quickly, and I was 
wondering if you hosed the engine with water? If so, get an airhose and
blow 
the crap out of every electrical connector you can find under the bonnet
as 
VL's are possibly the *worst* car in the world for trying to start after
the 
engine's been doused.
