This too is just shotgunning but by the sounds of it the car is going into

"limp home" mode where the engine shuts down cylinders when the fuel level

becomes too low. The sender unit may be telling the vehicle computer that
the level in the tank is almost empty due to the change in angle, when
going
uphill all the fuel goes to the rear of the tank. It's only a thought as I

have no experience with such systems.

<joke mode>
The easy solution is when required to climb an incline do a three point
turn
and reverse uphill. No expensive mechanics or replacement parts.
</joke mode>

 There are stories about early fords needing to do this (reverse up hills)

but I am yet to experience it myself. The problem is caused by the lack
of
a fuel pump and the tank (under the front seat) becoming lower than the
carbie. Having covered thousands of kilometres in both Australia and NZ in
a
17 "T" I can say it would take an awfully steep hill.

You may be able to test this theory with a trolley jack and a fuel
pressure
gauge (if the pressure doesn't drop as it looses rpm) and a timing light
to
see if cylinders are being shut down via the computer.
