A lot depends of the brand of tyre. I have seem far too many tyres that
were 
used as spares for too long blow out due to age than I care to. The steel 
belts will perish once exposed to water, even condensation. Boots of cars 
are known for not being a perfect storage place. Once punctured and
repaired 
doubly so.
The old Goodyear supersteel was notorious as were the uniroyals fitted on 
some bluebirds. The bluebirds being an ideal car for older drivers many 
would only replace tyres every 5 years or so. If left in for a second term

the spares when finally used were unpredictable and often blew at or
before 
half tread. I myself have had a terrible run with tyres lately. 3 blowouts

from tyres going lumpy (steel giving way) in only 6 months, the fault is 
caused by the original tyres still being on the vehicle (VX TD) after 10 
years. Even the almost new (in terms of tread) spare gave way last trip, 
always seems to happen on the highway, at speed, first the nasty vibration

from the separation then if you fail to stop in time the blowout.
Paul, a mate of mine used to replace tyres on his Fairmont GXL every
couple 
of years, because it was his play toy and only driven on the weekends the 
tyres didn't wear as fast as an everyday driver, before half  life he used

to trade them in, get a good price and put on a set of newies. 235/60X14 
Eagers weren't hard to sell second hand so not only did he used to get the

best of the grip the tyre have to offer it didn't cost him any extra than 
letting them wear out fully on a $/km scale.
Australian made tyres are usually the worst for self destructing as almost

all are made on the same Dunlop Pacific casing, even the BJ Out of
Rounder.
