Actually that's a very good point.

I've seen so many cars with unused spare tyres (which in itself is a good 
enough reason not to be carrying around 30kg of dead weight) that have
spent 
ten years or more lying in the bottom of a dark cold boot where the tyres 
have been excellent and performed just as well as new replacements.

In fact, it used to be somewhat common when buying new tyres to use the 
spare as a newy and buy three replacements (if the same tyre was
available) 
and relegate the best of the old ones for spare tyre duty.
