You're right, of course - I do like taking the piss on Yankees.
But I've heard over and over again that seat belts are a non-event there
and maybe it's just the Yankee press setting themselves up for piss-
taking:-)
I'm also stunned and amazed by some of the ninetys cars that actually
have an amazing mechanical system to 'present' the seat-belt for buckling
to drivers closing their doors. Never even on the horizon here.
And just for eveners - I'm well aware that Australians are prone to
'obedience' to officials far far more than their publicity about being
webellious would suggest. Hell - disgusting legislation is very often
tried here because here it has the best chance of working and being well
sorted before it's presented to more suspicious communities. See Red
Light Cameras, so-called random breath testing etc etc..
****loads of forelock tugging down-under is the go. Ergo, wearing seat-
belts being a popular thing here might be more to do with terrowism by
the authorities than the obvious safety benefits of the things:-)
And then there's the Ford Pinto fires thing - trapped, anyone?
Memories of the publicity on that matter will die hard.
