The *extended warranty* (which we took out when we bought the used car
and which is different from the manufacturers warranty) only covers
fuel pump, injectors and injector pump. I don't know why the tank
itself is not covered. It's not something that falls appart very
often, is it?

As to the cost: The invoice lists about $700 each for labour and the
fuel tank itself (plus GST). Is that too much? It wouldn't surprise
me...
