Yes, particularly if you live in a hot climate.  A couple of years
ago, I had a complete tread separation (i.e. the entire tread came off
the tire in one big piece) on some old-but-lots-of-tread tires on my
Newport; it destroyed my right rear fender skirt.

Sheer exposure to years of UV and Ozone will destroy tires.
