The fold flat third row seats were not available until 2003 models. The
2003
models have independent rear suspension, coil spring front suspension for
4WD models (before 2003, 4WD models had torsion bar front suspension).
2003
have more powerful engines, but not as strong transmissions (4R70W
transmissions instead of 4R100 transmissions). 4WD 2003 models can select
2WD, A4WD, 4WDH, or 4WDL. 4WD 2002 models only have A4WD, 4WDH, 4WDL. 2003
models are lightly lower than 2002 models, and the engine compartment is a
little roomier. Styling completely changed in 2003 vs 1997-2002.
I owned a 1997 Expedition and a 2003 Expedition (both 5.4L, 4WD). The
seats
were much better in the 2003. Reliability was similar. I'd suggest that a
2004-2005 might be the better years. All the bugs were worked out after
the
redesign in 2003 and they have the fold flat third row seats, and slightly
better fuel economy than the 2002s.
You should join the Expedition Owners Mailing List and seek the opinion of
the members of that group (see
