don't know the answer to your questions. However, seems it'd be more
likely that someone replaced or customized the trim panels to cover up
the speakers on purpose. Especially, if a custom sound system was
installed. My 89 (hatchback) has a grills that unscrews from speakers.
Don't know if that helps...but thats my 2 cents.
