Removing the head on a 4.0 Wrangler

Hi, I have a 2001 Wrangler 4.0. I need  to replace the valve lifters.  Can 
some one tell me if the head can be removed with the intake and exhaust 
manifolds attached. or do they have to come off first? It looks like a b_
_ 
ch to remove them in the vehicle.
