Mine might not be an option for you, but it may inspire you. :)
I mounted mine on my sound bar next to my head, display facing forward:

I'm not one for fiddling with channels or settings while moving, so 
having to turn around in my seat to see the face isn't a big problem for 
me. If I _had_ to, I can change channels by counting clicks of the dial, 
and volume and squelch are set by ear anyway.

It's nice having the speaker right by my ear, the better to hear in a 
noisy and sometimes topless Jeep. Mounted up so high it's hardly 
noticeable but doesn't interfere with either hard or safari tops; the 
only part I can see in the rearview is the mic cord hanging down. Wiring 
is run through split loom, zip tied to the roll bar and under the 
passenger door jamb.
