OK, my $0.02 Canadian (worth more than U$D, anyway) would be that a
handheld would be far superior, and there are gadgets that can in increase
the range up to 15x-25x.

And don't overlook the fact that the good old (new?) cellphones often have
the 'walkie-talkie' feature built-in. As well, Samsungs and others also
have GPS capabilities, and the ability to broadcast stills and movies of
your location if you're severely lost.

Many truckers up here have gone with these options, as well as those in
the Australian Outback.
