Handhelds are 'OK' to use on runs because everyone is close together so 
range isn't an issue.

I worked as a mobile data communications hardware tech for a number of 
years and have serious issues with the radiation the antenna puts out 
though.  If you pay attention you can notice 'professionals' who have to 
use 'walkie talkies' now hold them out at right angles to their face 
when talking.  This is a workman's comp thing to help avoid irradiating 
your brain.  The antennas transmit away from their base.

The safest setups are the handheld with an external antenna.

That said, most times I have seen them used they failed.  Either folks 
couldn't hear them or the batteries up and die.  Same for those fancy 
communication units they are putting out.  I have carried them and the 
CB so to act as a repeater until the batteries in the handheld died.

Actually I don't think I have ever seen a handheld last a trip....
