I'm going to assume that you have a Miata since  you posted on the
Miata group AND NEGLECTED TO MENTION WHAT KIND OF CAR YOU HAVE.

On a late model Miata the manual says you have to "push" the axle into
the differential. Superman couldn't "push" the axle in. You have to do
the following:

Lightly grease the axle splines and the clip. 

Push the axle in as far as you can get it to go. Be sure to take up
all the play in the CVs.  As you have noted this will be a bit too far
out. 

Give the outboard end of the axle a good whack with a large **RUBBER**
mallet. This will seat the clip.
