Maybe I am too cynical, but I just can't leave a filter on for a year. I 
would rather replace the OEM one more often.
Wix also makes a good one for the 1.6 & 1.8 liter miata, not sure about 
the bigger engine. It definitely has the valve.

This is a good time to switch if you are going to. One consideration is 
resale.
S**** oil or not, it adds to the value of the car in many people's 
opinion when it has been run on synthetics.

One area that I would go ahead and change is the tranny fluid and 
differential fluid with Redline oil. I did that at 10,000 miles with my 
last miata.
