The same holds true for the 1.6, at least for mine.
However, for long trips on the interstate the car is out of it's
element no matter what the gearing might be, anything over a couple of
hundred miles on a straight, boring interstate and comfort, luggage
space, etc. become more im****tant than handling or "fun factor" and,
unless there's at least a few twisties, the Miata stays home*.
*The exception to all this is my trips to Californicate to visit my
sister, there's one of the more fun curvy roads on my route, CA 74 and
CA 371 from Indio to Aguanga but my sister can't/won't ride in the
Miata so I'm forced to leave it home, the alternative would be to drive
the Miata and then, when at her house, ride in her car and my nerves
aren't up to 35mph on the freeways and 75mph in town (often on the
sidewalks to avoid traffic!) <G>
