There's a lot of information on this on the web as it's a very common
problem. Unfortunately it's not easy to fix and in my experience mechanics
or even mazda mechanics know stuff all about it. What you're getting from
the engine check light is not a code, when you get a code it is very
clear.
What I would suggest you do is short the GND and TEN pins as you have.
Then
connect a light or multimeter to the B+ and FEN terminals and read the
error
codes from there. Some models it appears "flash" these pins instead of the
engine light. A digital multimeter is no good as it's hard to see the rise
and fall effectively. Once you have the error codes you should be able to
fix what it tells you is wrong. I recommend reading the first page before
doing this as it has some all the appropriate warnings of how not to ****
it
up :-)
Check this page for the instructions I just gave you, this is for an MX6
but
it worked on my 94 rx7 (australian model)
http://www.totalrpm.com/article/1210
and this page for the error codes.

Sorry, you need to make the effort to check for replies. :-)
