I remember what they sounded like.  I just never really cared for it.

The first time I attended the 500 in person was in 1993.  I went with
a friend who had been there the previous couple of years.  In his
ecstatic description of the experience, he kept talking about the
sound of the engines.  When the race began, the sound just did not
tickle me the way it tickled him.

The sound of the first generation IRL V8s didn't do much for me
either.  Too low.  But I like the way the current ones sound.  Very
much like the early 3 litre F1 engines of the 60s.

Maybe we can get Simon Cowell to create a "Racing Idol" show, and we
can all text in which engine sound we prefer.

I defer to Forty's expertise on that.  I had assumed the pop-off issue
was fixed as part of the better officiating that came with the war.
